12.1. Overview

Increased usage of UML notation made state-transition diagrams as one of the important techniques in designing test cases. In UML notations, the behavior of a component is described by a State Transition Diagram (STD). As such, testers are expected to have basic knowledge of UML and also, object oriented paradigm in order to evaluate object oriented systems at the stage of analysis and design.

This chapter is on using State Transition Diagram based Test Case Design. This technique is an Advanced Requirements-based testing technique. Following sections provide step by step approach towards developing test case design from initial requirements to arrive at intermediary step that produces state transition diagram and then writing test cases from the state transition diagram.
