Arunkumar Khannur's Software Testing Knowledge Center

4.1. Overview

Software Testing is not an activity that is carried out at the end of development but is a structured process that starts from initial phases of software development life cycle and is carried out at different levels. This would be achieved by having different levels of testing referred to as phases of testing which include: Unit testing; Functional testing; Integration testing; System testing; Regression testing; Interface testing; Acceptance testing; and Field testing. If the system includes Commercially Of The Shelf (COTS) components, also referred to as third party components, there may not be any unit testing of the COTS, but integration testing should be conducted. This chapter is all about different phases of software testing.
