6.4. Strategies for Test Design Specification

So that now you understood the principles and concept of Test Design Specification the high level test design or detailed test design strategies can be followed to define the Test Framework and Techniques.

6.4.1. High Level Test Design
This is to set the baseline, the Test Team use the Business Requirements, the Design Specification and the Roadmap documents to derive the Testing Requirements (including testability, the type of testing, and the test coverage). The testers review the information with the Technical Director to validate the scope and testing coverage, and to confirm priority.

Testing effort should reflect the priority. Priority setting (H-High, M-Medium, and L-Low) may be based on a number of factors, i.e., contractual requirement, the importance of a feature, the complexity of a feature, the validity and the completeness of the design.

6.4.2. Detailed Test Design
Following the High Level Test Design Specification, the Testers develop the Testing Criteria, which defines the process and technique and the Completion Criteria which defines the target and measures, and outline the testing components (in terms of Test Suites and Test Plans) for each of the Test Requirements.

This process requires some in-depth study and review of the Technical Design Specification and Feature Design produced by the Development Team.
