9.6. Input/Output Domain Testing

Input/Output domain Testing requires good system thinking. It is more experience based and knowledge on software under test and environmental elements around it play a very crucial role. Input/Output domain Testing is carried out from two perspectives: Input/Output domain Testing from Input side; and Input/Output domain Testing from Output side.

For illustration, let us think that when we want to write test cases for Print command in a software under test. When we apply Input/Output domain testing from Input side, we write test cases by thinking on possibilities at desktop from where we give print command. Accordingly test cases may involve: testing printer with different possibilities on selection of printer, viz., correct printer, wrong printer; trying printing with short keys; unplugging printer connection to desktop; when printing job is halfway through canceling job in spool; etc.

On the other hand, when we apply Input/Output domain testing from Output side, we write test cases by thinking on possibilities at printer from where we get printed papers. Accordingly test cases may involve: testing printer with different possibilities: Unplugging Cable connected to printer; printing with no paper; inserting paper of different size or thickness; etc.

In Input/Output domain testing, number of test cases depends on understanding the functionality of the system. There is no specific rules on writing test cases.
