3.1 Overview

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a unit of the U.S. Commerce Department, software bugs cost as much as USD 60 billion annually. These software bugs can cause harm to a person, or to the environment, or to a company. In order to manage these bugs and to keep related risk of occurrence under control, it is essential to understand the causes of deviation of software from their expected behaviour, reason for occurrence of bugs, the consequences of bugs, challenges on when to stop testing, and a taxonomy for bugs- classification of bugs based on the possible places in various phases of development cycle.

In this chapter, we discuss on importance of bugs, consequences of bugs, challenges on when to stop testing, a taxonomy for bugs- classification of bugs based on the possible places in various phases of development cycle.
