6.3 Data Flowgraphs and their Representation

Data Flowgraph is a picture of the system as a network of functional processes connected to each other by pipelines of data (Data Flows) and holding tanks of data (Data Stores). The processes transform the data. The Data Flowgraph partitions the system into its component parts. Notations used in data flowgraph representation are as shown in Fig. 6.1 Data Flowgraph Elements

Elements or notations in a Data Flowgraphs include Processes, Data Flows and Data Stores. The External Entities are not shown in a Data Flowgraph, but Data Stores do.

Circles are used to represent Processes that transform data input and data output.
An arrow is used to represent the flow of data into or out of a process or data store.
A set of parallel lines, represents a collection of data items at rest, a place where data resides as shown in the figure below.
